In the case of a child classifiable as DIVA in which there is indication for a peripheral access for 2-7 days, it is often necessary to resort to an ultrasound-guided peripheral access, to cannulate the deep veins of the arm.
Before resorting to ultrasound-guided access, where possible, it is advisable to make a further attempt to access the superficial veins using a visualization system based on NIR technology (Near- Infra Red), which allows the detection of veins located less than 7-8 mm from the skin plane. If access is foreseen for 2-7 days, it will be appropriate to place a polyurethane short cannula, 22G or 24G (depending on the size of the vein), equipped with a wide soft wing and preassembled extension.
