Even if placed and managed with the greatest care, it is rare that the agocannulas (short peripheral cannulas) positioned in superficial veins of the arm can last for more than a week. It is more likely that they will face different complications (dislocation, phlebitis, thrombosis, occlusion, and extravasation) that will eventually always be configured as 'catheter failure' and the need to remove the device.
The positioning of long peripheral cannulas in the deep veins of the upper limb, through an ultrasound guided route, will allow instead to have a peripheral access for periods longer than a week (up to a month).

Anche se posizionate e gestite con la massima cura, è raro che le agocannule (cannule periferiche corte) posizionate in vene superficiali del braccio possano durare per più di una settimana. E' più probabile che vadano incontro a complicanze diverse (dislocazione, flebite, trombosi, occlusione, stravaso) che infine si configureranno sempre come 'catheter failure' e necessità di rimuovere il dispositivo.
Il posizionamento di cannule periferiche lunghe in vene profonde dell'arto superiore, per via ecoguidata, consentirà invece di avere un accesso periferico per periodi superiori a una settimana (fino ad un mese).
