A tunneled PICC, if secured to the skin with a subcutaneously anchored system (SAS), can be considered as a long-term central VAD. In most cases, the SAS will stay in place for many months, until the catheter is removed.
The PICC should be in polyurethane, power injectable, open-ended, non-valved. This type of catheter will be associated with minimal risk of malfunction or mechanical complications.
