The emergency FICC will be positioned by ultrasound-guided puncture and cannulation of the common or superficial femoral vein (visualization in short axis, 'out of plane' puncture) with simple Seldinger technique. Low cost polyurethane catheters will be used, at least 25-30 cm long: smaller lengths, in fact, do not guarantee that the catheter tip is actually placed in a central position (i.e. in the inferior vena cava). The number of lumens will be dictated by clinical needs.
Emergency FICC must be removed within 24-48 hours.
