If a central venous access is not strictly indicated, a medium-tern peripheral VAD (mini-midline or midline) may be used in the non-hospitalized patient requiring venous access for few weeks or few months.
The choice between mini-midline and midline depends on the expected duration of access. A mini-midline (long peripheral cannulas: 6-15 cm) is appropriate for a duration of 2-3 weeks (usually, no more than one month), while a traditional midline (midclavicular: 15-25 cm) may stay in place - if properly maintained - even for months.
When the expected need of peripheral access is difficult to assess, a traditional midline (tip in the last tract of the axillary vein or in the subclavian vein) is to be preferred.
